This is Acrylic on stretched canvas. Sesame Street is a show I grew up on and as an adult thinking back on the show, it started to remind me of the Bronx since it was a pretty dirty neighborhood for a children's show, and each character started reminding me of different people in society to me, especially in a city like NY. Cookie monster reminded me of addicts I used to see on my block and people would just laugh and them and pass them by, they were overlooked, but he is actually a very sad character. Ernie is another character that represents a certain marginalized part of society to me as a closeted gay couple. I try to reflect on what this means to me and how it relates to society as a whole while I paint these. I try to convey some of the emotions I feel while thinking through this and I use these characters as a conduit to get that through.
